YK-11 is structurally distinct from other SARMs: it is based on a 19-nortestosterone backbone rather than a non-steroidal scaffold. In C2C12 myoblast cell studies, YK-11 induced significant increases in myogenic differentiation and myosin heavy chain expression compared to DHT, while simultaneously upregulating follistatin mRNA, a natural antagonist of myostatin.
Myostatin is a negative regulator of muscle growth. By upregulating follistatin, YK-11 effectively removes one of the biological brakes on muscle development. This dual mechanism (AR agonism + myostatin inhibition) is unique among SARMs. Published research has also investigated YK-11 as a potential preventive agent for sepsis-related muscle wasting, showing decreased mortality and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels.
