S23 binds to the androgen receptor with a Ki of 1.7 nM and demonstrates strong anabolic activity in preclinical models. In castrated male rats, S23 treatment maintained levator ani muscle mass at physiological levels at doses between 0.1 and 0.3 mg/day, indicating potent anabolic effects.
S23 has also been investigated as a potential hormonal male contraceptive. In intact male rats, S23 combined with estradiol benzoate produced a reversible reduction in sperm concentration while maintaining sexual behaviour, an area of active research interest.
